One of the reasons leather bomber jackets have maintained such popularity over the years is that they are incredibly durable and warm. With a little effort it is possible to keep a leather jacket in like-new condition for many years. Our guide has everything you need to know about cleaning and maintaining your leather bomber jacket, so you can enjoy years of warmth and comfort.
Cleaning the Leather
For the most part leather is a very forgiving material. Keeping leather clean can be as simple as wiping away the dust and dirt. Using a mild soap diluted in warm water and a soft sponge or cloth, or a prepackaged mild baby wipe, you can gently wipe away most dirt. It is important not to scrub the leather, just wipe it in one direction.
After wiping down the jacket, blot away excess moisture with a dry sponge or cloth. Then hang the jacket to continue drying. Once the jacket has been dried completely, you can apply a leather conditioner to keep the leather moist and supple.
Cleaning the Liner
For most leather bomber jackets there is a silk or polyester liner inside. For light cleaning, the use of a fabric refreshing spray may suffice. For a deeper cleaning we recommend using a small amount of mild detergent or baking soda in a bucket of warm water.
Dip a sponge or soft cloth into your soapy water and then wring out as much as you can. Working in sections wipe the liner with your damp sponge or cloth and then again with a dry sponge or cloth to absorb excess moisture. It’s important not to over saturate the liner since it can affect the leather on the other side.
Once you have wiped the entire liner, you can go back though it again with a damp sponge that has been dipped in clean water. This will rinse the liner and remove left over soap from the washing stage. After the liner has been rinsed you can hang your jacket to dry. Be sure you have adequate air flow to ensure proper drying.
Getting Rid of Wrinkles
Keeping your jacket wrinkle-free starts with proper storage. Always keep your leather bomber jacket on a hanger to keep it from wrinkling. Folding a jacket and storing it in a drawer or on a shelf can create creases or wrinkles in the leather over time.
In order to remove wrinkles in leather, set your iron to medium heat, making sure your steam setting is turned off. Lay your jacket out smoothing the wrinkles with your hand. Then place a brown paper bag over the area you want to iron, and moving quickly, iron the area. It is important to keep the iron moving, working on one section at a time until you have worked out all the wrinkles.
In order to keep you leather bomber jacket looking its best you need to periodically condition the leather with a leather conditioner. For most environments this should be done once or twice a year. For dry environments I may need to be done more frequently to prevent the leather from drying out.
